During the late 1970's an introduction of Hip Hop culture to the mainstream media, by way of Aerosol writing, fueled the initial rise and fall of the B-boy dance form. After a brief appearance of the Breaking culture in film, music video and print during the 1980's, the industry driving this exploitation, soon developed and packaged their “Rap” version of Hip-Hop, along with other fad-based trends forcing the Breakin’ culture to drop back into a more subdued state.

The 1990's bi product of this Hip Hop “industry” were the youth, who were subjected to hyped up commercialized images, negative stereotypes and glamorization of the haunting environment in which they survived day to day. Despite commercial programming and having the odds statistically stacked against them, many New York City youth remained true to the roots of the revolutionary culture that sparked the initial worldwide phenomenon.

In 1996 a hand full of New York City High School students formed The Breaks Kru, a group that would unknowingly find themselves at the forefront of a cultural renaissance. This resurgence in the New York City B-boy scene sparked intrigue in the members of Breaks Kru. Armed with raw talent, willingness and dedication to a dieing art form, these characteristics would prove vital as The Breaks Kru spent the next couple of years traveling the legendary neighborhoods throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC meeting pioneers, challenging rivals, honing their craft and making a name for themselves, as they would soon be hailed as the backbone of the New York City B-boy community.

With a “No holds bared” approach towards dancing, a bit of youthful arrogance and a diverse style, the group became known for their severe battle tactics devastating any Breakin’ competition in which they attended, win or lose, in and out of the “circle” as they gained nationwide respect.

Although overshadowed by the growing worldwide B-boy community Breaks Kru were proud of their hometown of NYC. Representing the city at Hip Hop events through out the East coast, they earned the admiration of their peers and respect from the pioneers and icons of the dance. How ever Breaks Kru wouldn’t get the attention of the international community until after video footage was released of their infamous battle against Crazy Legs and the new Rock Steady Crew in the late 1990’s.

Showing a true devotion to B-boying, and respect for the knowledge and history of the culture, The Breaks Kru battled all the way to the top establishing their name as NYC’s top crew for many years consecutively, boasting an impressive win column, and holding 1st place titles in many regional B-boy events –including Two time winners of the title “Kings of New York”.

Maturing in age as well as with in the dance, The Breaks Kru began seizing opportunities to travel to the west coast and abroad, making an impact internationally and at the same time, forging a family type bond that has been instrumental in the Kru’s success. While all along giving back to their communities, Breaks Kru’s underlined focus has been community activism and accurately passing on the knowledge and history of the culture to the youth. With new members who have risen with in the ranks, The Breaks Kru unveils a blanket of knowledge to communities everywhere through performances, event organization, workshops, lectures, and demonstrations by partnering with Educators, Non profit organizations, schools, and community programs, through out NYC -selectively throughout the tri-state area and are always reaching out to expand further.

In 2009 with 13 years of cultural representation The Breaks Kru has turned their sights on a new battle, the Hip Hop Dance industry. While remaining respectful of the art and traditions of B-boying, Breaks Kru plans to epitomize B-boy industry, by consulting companies and corporations who wish to use B-boying in culturally responsible ways, influencing yet another generation of B-boys and B-girls -this time by setting an industry example.
